Objectives:
1) Create a multilayer mysterious symbolic image that illustrates one of the ‘Sevens’.
2) Create an innovative visual vocabulary that communicates your ideas.
3) Work in Photoshop with layers and other tools to create the image.

Guidelines:
- Find one of the ‘Seven’ sins that you would like to explore in this project.
- Research the idea based on the The Seven Deadly Sins.
- Start gathering digital images that create a symbolic vocabulary to illustrate your idea. You may use stock imagery if you must, but it must be altered in a significant fashion. If you have the means, I would like you to consider taking the photos yourself.
- Create a multilayer image with depth and mystery in Photoshop.
- Do NOT use any text without checking with me first. See if you can create the idea with images instead of relying on text to send the message.
- A portion of the image MUST be in black and white.

Grading for this project will be as follows – 85% of your grade will be based on the final image / 15% will be how you follow the directions of the project.

Final size – a minimum of 5 x 5 / 300 dpi / rgb
Presentation – This will be a digital presentation only, you will not need to print and mount.

Present an informative overview of the work of your assigned designer/new media artist and the impact of their work.

- A Powerpoint or Keynote presentation with five to ten+ images showing examples of their work.

- 21 copies of a one page overview to turn in to me and your colleagues with an extra page of examples of their work.

Requirements and Considerations

- Five to ten+ (give yourself time to talk about their work) good quality images/movies to project with your presentation. Image size should be close to 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 72 dpi. You will probably not be able to find many images online that fit this requirement. If you resort to web images, make sure that we can tell what we are looking at. Additional detail scans of images might be helpful. If you can find actual hard copy examples of a persons work, you are encouraged to bring that in for your presentation as well.

- Powerpoint should be used to present your images. However, treat Powerpoint as an image projecting application. I have no interest in glitzy backgrounds, bullet points, and silly transitional animations.

- This presentation should cover some basic information about who this person is, but should not be an exhaustive biography. Although basic personal information is helpful, your presentation should focus on the person’s work. Can their style be categorized? Is their work still relevant? Does their work feel dated? How do you relate/respond to their work? etc.

- Remember, proper grammar and spelling is expected for all written assignments.

With this assignment, you will each be assigned a photo from the list below. Make sure you do the one assigned to you. The specific photo assignments will be handed out on 3/10 | 3/11 during class. If you are absent or late, don’t just pick a photo as if it isn’t the one I have asigned you then you will have not completed the assignment and will have earned an “F”. Please contact me via email if you need clarification on which photo you were assigned to.

You are to restore the photograph to the best state possible. These photos are from way before any of us were born, so I understand they weren’t perfect photos even when they were first developed. Please do the best you possibly can based on the original photograph. You are also to color the photograph using realistic colors. These photos are from Germany during the World War 2 era, so it might be in your best interest to research the time period to come up with an accurate color pallate.

You are to use Photoshop to the best of your abilities. Use what you have learned, research new techniques, and rely on your classmates. If you have a technical question please resort to your book and the internet before asking me. This doesn’t mean I won’t help you, I just want you to get in the habit of researching a problem before asking for help.

TIP – The healing brushes and the clone tool will be your best friends during this project. Remember when colorizing the photograph to use your blending modes and opacity. Also remember to work on new layers, as if you want to make a change it won’t affect all of your work if you don’t want it to… and name your layers!

Grading for this project will be as follows – 60% of your grade will be based on the realism of the final image / 25% will be on how well you restored the image / 15% will be how you follow the directions of the project.

SHAPE

All seen things encompass one of five shapes.

GEOMETRIC: related to plane geometry (circle, triangle, rectangle…)

RECTILINEAR: shapes composed of all straight edges or lines (not geometric shapes)

CURVILINEAR: shapes composed of only curved edges or lines (not geometric shapes)

IRREGULAR: shapes composed of a combination of straight and curved lines (not geometric shapes)

AUTOMATIC AND/OR CALLIGRAPHIC: brush marks, spilled paint on the ground – these shapes are not controlled.

Shapes can be either objective or non-objective

OBJECTIVE: related to an object (representational)

NON-OBJECTIVE: no relation to an object (non-representational)

Draw twelve equally sized squares, each of which is to be viewed as its own compositional (picture) plane.  Each square must be equally spaced from each other.

Draw one black shape in each of the twelve compositional planes.  Make sure that there is no or little repetition in the types and appearances of the shapes.

Use as much of an 11’ x 14” sheet of paper as possible.
