digital photography – scanner project

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Summer 2008

Assignment: Scanner as Camera

Description: A scanner is really just a large digital camera with a shallow depth of field.  Create two “collages” by scanning objects on the scanner.

Objectives:

  1. Using the scanner as a means of creative expression.
  2. Discover the advantages and limitations of the scanner for reproducing three-dimensional objects.
  3. Exploration of the metaphorical and symbolic meaning of objects

Guidelines:

  1. Try scanning many different objects.
  2. Create the “collage” in photoshop, not on the scanner glass.  A great deal of photoshop manipulation should occur in these images.
  3. Adjust the image settings in Photoshop to create a good final image
  4. Final prints should be as large as possible.
  5. Create 2 final images of different subjects

Digital Photography – Emulation Project

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Spring 2008

Assignment: Emulation

Description: Working in the ’style’ of a photographer you admire and creating images that are similar.

Objectives:

Researching photographers

Using a digital camera

Image making in the ’style’ of another photographer. This is often a good place to begin when you want to expand or get moving in your work. Eventually, it will expand and evolve to your own style, if you continue in the process.

Presenting your work: PowerPoint and print

Guidelines:

Look for a photographer whose work you find interesting and challenging.

Be sure to let me know which photographer you have picked before starting the assignment.

Read about the photographer and what his / her work is about to understand more of what motivates the work.

Find at least 2 works by this photographer that are in a high enough resolution to be presented in PowerPoint (100 dpi: 7.5″ x 10)

Create 3 images in the ’style’ of this photographer

Your work needs to look like the photographer might have taken the images, not an attempt to exactly reproduce the image.

      6.  Place the two images by the photographer and your three emulations in a PowerPoint presentation.

      7.  Print each image

a. Minimum of 8 x 10, unless your photographer created smaller images.

b. Optional, consider printing the exact size that your photographer would work.

Due

PowerPoint

a. 2 images by your photographer

b. 3 Emulation images

3 Emulation prints: 8 x 10 or greater

Prints maybe be turned in without special mounting or presentation
