Electronic Imaging – My Boyfriend Came Back From the War – Remix

Your final presentation will be to create a PowerPoint/Keynote nonlinear project based on the internet phenomenon My Boyfriend Came Back from the War.  You will use your own symbolic images to create an innovative visual vocabulary that communicates your own version of My Boyfriend Came Back from the War based on your experience or opinions of our country’s current war.  You can use images you find online or existing photographs, but you must Photoshop tools to alter these images and create new images for this project.  The final presentation will be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation in which the individual parts of the project lead to different parts of the presentation. You will be creating a non-linear narrative. .

Adv Digital – Sound

Sound

A sound is something that is heard. Listening is an activity.

Sound design is fine-tuning the message your audience will sense. Sound may be buried in the message and only noticed if it is ever taken away. Sound may be the message. Without it we limit the use of one of our most receptive senses. Naturally, certain tones are conveyed by using certain sounds that ultimately communicate a message. It will be up to you to determine what you want to say and how you want to say it through the design of sound.

Below is a list of five words. Each student must compose sound from a sample or recorded means or a combination of both that communicates each word. Listen critically to how different sounds portray different messages. Each sound should be exactly ten seconds in length, exported as .mp3 files. We will play each .mp3 one at a time through the QuickTime player. Do not use music.

The words to use are:

Soft
Global
Digital
Speed
Mournful

Details. Five, ten-second .mp3 files.

Each file should be labeled with the corresponding sound names as well as students’ initials followed with .mp3 (for instance soft_studentinitials.aif). Place the files in a folder labeled “sound_studentslastname” and burn it to a CD labeled with your first and last name as well as “Sound.” Be prepared to load the files onto the presentation computer at the beginning of class.

Grading

Audio: 100%. Student demonstrated the ability to record, import, edit, compose, and export .aif files. Student also demonstrated an appropriate, clear, and memorable solution to the given problem. Level of finish and technical craft achieved.

Progress Crit = Nov 17

Gas Zappers by Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung

GAS ZAPPERS is a series of interactive online art game that tackles climate change. The game’s protagonist is the polar bear—that victimized, yet cuddly symbol of global warming. Players embody the polar bear as it progresses through different climate change scenarios: Venice under water, a forest threatened by bulldozers, and an altercation with vicious oil derricks.

seven deadly sins – electronic imaging

Objectives:
1) Create a multilayer mysterious symbolic image that illustrates one of the ‘Sevens’.
2) Create an innovative visual vocabulary that communicates your ideas.
3) Work in Photoshop with layers and other tools to create the image.

Guidelines:
- Find one of the ‘Seven’ sins that you would like to explore in this project.
- Research the idea based on the The Seven Deadly Sins.
- Start gathering digital images that create a symbolic vocabulary to illustrate your idea. You may use stock imagery if you must, but it must be altered in a significant fashion. If you have the means, I would like you to consider taking the photos yourself.
- Create a multilayer image with depth and mystery in Photoshop.
- Do NOT use any text without checking with me first. See if you can create the idea with images instead of relying on text to send the message.
- A portion of the image MUST be in black and white.

Grading for this project will be as follows – 85% of your grade will be based on the final image / 15% will be how you follow the directions of the project.

Final size – a minimum of 5 x 5 / 300 dpi / rgb
Presentation – This will be a digital presentation only, you will not need to print and mount.

Research Presentation Guidelines – Electronic Imaging

Research Presentation

Present an informative overview of the work of your assigned designer/new media artist and the impact of their work.

- A Powerpoint or Keynote presentation with five to ten+ images showing examples of their work.

- 21 copies of a one page overview to turn in to me and your colleagues with an extra page of examples of their work.

Requirements and Considerations

- Five to ten+ (give yourself time to talk about their work) good quality images/movies to project with your presentation. Image size should be close to 1024 pixels x 768 pixels at 72 dpi. You will probably not be able to find many images online that fit this requirement. If you resort to web images, make sure that we can tell what we are looking at. Additional detail scans of images might be helpful. If you can find actual hard copy examples of a persons work, you are encouraged to bring that in for your presentation as well.

- Powerpoint should be used to present your images. However, treat Powerpoint as an image projecting application. I have no interest in glitzy backgrounds, bullet points, and silly transitional animations.

- This presentation should cover some basic information about who this person is, but should not be an exhaustive biography. Although basic personal information is helpful, your presentation should focus on the person’s work. Can their style be categorized? Is their work still relevant? Does their work feel dated? How do you relate/respond to their work? etc.

- Remember, proper grammar and spelling is expected for all written assignments.

Presentations begin on Nov. 12 and 13

Reblog: radiohead rap by adam buxton

I can’t say anything this song doesn’t say brilliantly. Comedian Adam Buxton takes on the Radiohead remix contest with his own entry, which cuts through the hype brings a bit of wit to TV incidental music and remixing alike. And, really, how often do you get to say “Radiohead” and “rap” in the same sentence? Take my mechanical rights, please!

See, there, I said something. It wasn’t very good. Just so listen to the song and thank me later, okay?

See also Adam Buxton’s sketch for BBC3’s Rush Hour which cleans up NWA to “Help Da Police.”Thanks, Jaymis!

Deadline Changes

Over the next week or so, I will be very involved in the University’s search for a new director for the Center of Excellence in the Creative Arts.  Unfortunately, that will mean that I will occasionally miss all or part of a class.

I have changed a couple of upcoming deadlines to help us all through this process.

Advanced Digital:
Swarm Progress Crit = Wednesday October 22

Electronic Imaging
Restore Projects will still be due on October 20 or 21

Project 3 prints will be due on October 22 or 23

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
