Maybe it’s just my experience, but there’s a really negative association with internet/text message shorhand/L337. I feel like the Internet is a pretty difficult forum for taking people seriously in the first place, and adding that kind of lettering to your message makes it REALLY hard to take people seriously. It just looks lazy and/or childish. More, it’s just a royal pain in the neck to read.
I don’t mind the substitutions of ‘@’ and ‘!’ in the words. If it was full on L337, it would definitely be hard to read but I think this reads easy enough. I like how the pig latin mirrors the nonsensical answers that we are often given in response to difficult questions asked about the war and the president. You have to take time to sort it out and unscramble the mess before you get anything out of it. The vids are really nice too…as usual.
I don’t think I have ever tried reading pig latin. As Brett said, it’s confusing/nonsensical nature is fitting – the politics of the issue of war is not a realm of brevity and clarity. I am not sure everyone will be committed to really *work* at this piece to understand it – but then again, that is very reminiscent of how it is in reality. Show us some flashy stuff and pictures and who cares to read/think about anything but what is spelled out to us.
The only thing I would *maybe* reconsider is the pictures of the the two kids – they are pretty shocking and I am not sure if they take away from the piece or not. The severe contrast, though, of the side pages has a big impact because of these, but the kid with the missing leg is a little gruesome. Granted, that’s the nature of war – so perhaps you may be good with a warning or something. I am not sure how to approach it, because I understand what the pictures are for, but I think they limit your audience. I don’t know. Maybe someone else will have a more definite opinion or suggestion.
Good work, though! The pixelation of the videos is particularly nice.
I think I am with Matt on the leet speak thing. Maybe sticking with pig latin the entire time would have been more fitting. I am not sure leet on the White House page make as much sense as the pig latin. Did you use a pig latin translator?
I’m learning a lot today. I had to look up what “leet speak” was.
I agree with everyone’s suggestion that it appears odd, but it does add to the notion of the site being “hacked”.
I like this even though it is a lot to take in. I like that it’s interactive even though it’s a remix site. You’re getting pretty good at this new media stuff.
